SOAPSTONE

Soapstone (talc slate, steatite) is a group of natural stones that mainly consist of the magnesium silicate talc in a massively dense formation.

The rock is mined almost worldwide. Depending on the composition, the stones differ regionally in their hardness and friability. Secondary components are the minerals chlorite, magnesite and serpentine.

So-called soapstone stoves, which are characterized by an extraordinarily long heat storage capacity, are preferably made from Finnish soapstone. These soapstones are much harder and not suitable for sculptural design. Because of its heat resistance, soapstone has also been used for cookware since ancient times.
