THE SAUNA IN FINLAND The sauna is an important element of the heart of Finland. The word „sauna" originates from the Finnish language translates somewhere along the lines of „room made of wood". The Finnish sauna belongs to the most traditional forms of sweating to cleanse the body, and has been practiced for centuries. Typical temperatures in a sauna are between 85 and 88° C with a relatively low humidity of 10 to 30%. Infusions with menthol or eucalyptus added at this temperature have a soothing, beneficial effect on one’s respiratory system. After taking a sauna, which should be for about 8 to 15 minutes, the cool-down phase takes place. In Finland, it is frequently the case, that one exits the log-house sauna and jumps into a nearby ice-cold lake. However, one can also cool off in the snow or with a cold shower. This alternating hot-cold process should only be carried out for a maximum of 3 times in a row. SOAPSTONE Soapstone (Steatite) is a group of natural stones, which primarily consist of magnesium silicate talc in highly concentrated formations. This stone is mined almost everywhere in the world. Depending on the makeup of a particular kind of soapstone, the stone may vary in hardness and brittleness. This usually depends on the region where the particular soapstone is from. Additional components of soapstone are the minerals chloride, magnetite, and serpentine. It is from the Finnish variety of soapstone that the select, so-named "Soapstone Stoves" are built. These stoves exhibit an extraordinary ability to retain heat. This type of soapstone is, however, much harder and is not suited for malleable objects. Due to its ability to retain heat, soapstone has been used since the beginning of history in the making of cookware. Dimensions
